The Yeomen of the Guard

The Pittsburgh Savoyards bring Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard to the stage, with Robert Hockenberry serving as stage director and Guy Russo as music director. Set against the imposing walls of the Tower of London, this richly entertaining operetta combines romance, deception, comedy, and dramatic intrigue.

The story begins with Colonel Fairfax, who has been sentenced to death for sorcery. With only hours remaining before his execution, Fairfax secretly marries a woman he has never met, ensuring that his fortune cannot fall into the hands of his executioner. The mysterious bride turns out to be Elsie Maynard, a young woman who has been imprisoned in the Tower.

But Fairfax’s marriage creates an unexpected complication for Jack Point, a jester who loves Elsie and had hoped to marry her himself. As Fairfax and Elsie struggle to understand their sudden marriage, Point becomes determined to win Elsie back, setting off a tangled series of schemes, mistaken identities, and romantic complications.

Unlike many of Gilbert & Sullivan’s more purely comic works, The Yeomen of the Guard balances its humor with genuine emotion and some of Sullivan’s most beautiful music. Audiences will experience the score in all its glory with a 30-piece live orchestra, bringing the richness and sweep of Sullivan’s orchestration to the stage.

With clever comedy, memorable characters, romance, suspense, and a story that doesn’t always go where you expect, The Yeomen of the Guard offers a fresh look at one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most distinctive works.
